How to change front and back brake pads and rotors on a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta 2.0?

I need a link to a tutorial, or any inside knowledge that could be posted on a step by step process, hopefully with pictures on how to change these out. Everywhere I read is you need a special tool and that you should stay away from doing it yourself because of the difficulty, but i do not want to spend $800 on a brake job. So if anyone has ever done this please let me know what you recommend. I have a friend that is very mechanically inclined, and has changed brakes on every American made vehicle, so I am hoping this tutorial could help us both in installing these. How to change front and back brake pads and rotors on a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta 2.0?The front brakes are just like any other car. Two allen bolts holding the caliper on to the caliper bracket. Then two 18mm bolts holding the caliper bracket on.

The rear brakes will be difficult for you. You will need a special tool that screws the caliper piston back into the caliper. Besides that you need a thin 15mm wrench and a 13mm wrench to loosen the caliper. The bracket does not need to come off. You can sneak the rotor out.How to change front and back brake pads and rotors on a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta 2.0?I suggest a Robert Bentley Manual for your model.Especially if you're going to do more work on the car in the future. Maybe Amazon has them.

Its not at all difficult. Just some minor differences from USA cars. Years ago, my son and I changed the brakes on my 2000 GTI.

We didnt crash on the test drive, so I guess we did OK

However, I strongly recommend Genuine VW parts. There is a difference.

  • How do i change the front brake pads on a honda civic type r?

Does anyone have a link to a website explaining how to change the brake pads on a honda civic type r or would they be able to explain it?How do i change the front brake pads on a honda civic type r?Some people have great confidence in garages!

After a major service my car did 4 (FOUR) miles before a grinding noise occur ed due to there being NO LINING on the rear brakes. Another time they adjusted the rear brake clearance by tightening the handbrake cable. When loaded this pulled the brakes on - gently - and heated up the drums to the point where the grease in the bearing ran out into the drum ad ruined the race and the linings - no rear brakes!

Most main dealer garages rely on company car repairs and many of them cannot even blow up the tyres to the correct - or even the same - pressures. Believe me I have checked.

And so on and so on.

If you must use a garage go to a local - one man - one. He relies on doing a good job or his name gets round and he goes out of business.

Get a Haynes manual and have confidence.

How do i change the brakes on a 95 dodge conversion van?

i need to change the front brakes on my 95 dodge ram 2500 conversion van. first, how do i jack it up? and then what steps do i need to take to change the brakes? any help would be greatly appreciatedHow do i change the brakes on a 95 dodge conversion van?Pffft, don't listen to him. It's rather easy.

    First, set the parking brake.

Now, jack it up. Easiest spot for me is under the shock absorber.

Right before the tire lifts off the ground, break loose the lug nuts with a tire iron. Only a quarter turn each, just enough to make it easier later.

Get the tire maybe half an inch off the ground. Place jackstands on the frame in case the jack fails on you.

Continue removing the lug nuts (See how the tire wants to spin? That's why you broke it loose earlier -- You'd never be able to break them loose with the tire spinning around like that!), and remove the tire.

The caliper is held on by two bolts. I believe they're 5/8%26quot; but I could be mistaken. Keep note of which end is up and how everything faced, including the little anti-rattle clip.

Now that those bolts are off, use a wide screwdriver to remove the caliper. Easiest way for me is using the hub as a fulcrum and pushing away on the brake pad.

Pull the brake pads out. Take a look at the caliper. See the piston that pushes on the pads? Use the old brake pad and a C-clamp to force that piston back in.

Put the new pads on. The inner pad just rests on the caliper mount, while the outer pad is attached to the caliper -- you may need to hammer the fingers to get it to hold on tight.

Put everything back the way you found it. Remember when putting lug nuts back on, you need to %26quot;skip%26quot; a lug. Imagine if they were in a straight line... you don't tighten it 1-2-3-4-5, but rather 1-3-5-2-4.

Any questions, just ask. My Yahoo! IM is the same as my account here, ahanix1989. Or email me at ahanix %26lt;at%26gt; gmail.comHow do i change the brakes on a 95 dodge conversion van?Don't do it. If you put it together wrong, your van will be an accident waiting to happen. Have someone with mechanical knowledge do the job. If possible, watch them and learn.

i need to know the step by step procedure to change the front brake pads on 1995 honda accord lx 2.2How to change the front brakes on 1995 honda accord lx 2.2?1. Loosen the front wheel nuts slightly, then raise the

car and support on safety stands. remove the lug nuts and the wheel

    2. Remove the lower caliper bolt and pivot the caliper

up out of the way. (If I remember the caliper bolt is 11mm but could be larger) the caliper bolts come through from the back of the caliper through the caliper and pads to the outer side of the caliper. The caliper bolts have a rubber boot between the bolt head and the caliper. You may need to hold the square lock washer in place with an open end wrench if the bolt turns but doesn't come out as the bolt sometimes rusts to the guide. Also, you may have to loosen the upper caliper bolt to get the caliper to pivot upwards.

    3. Remove the pad shims, pad retainers and pads

    4. Clean the caliper thoroughly; remove any rust, and

    check for grooves and cracks.

    5. Check the brake disc for damage and cracks.

    6. Install the pad retainers

7.Apply Molykote M77 grease to the inner side of the

pad shims and the back of the pads. Wipe excess

    grease off the shim.

    8) push the caliper pistons back into the caliper using a special tool or a large set of channel lock plyers. be sure to leave the inner brake pad in place when pushing the piston back to avoid damage to the piston or seal

    9. Install the new brake pads and pad shims correctly.

    10. Pivot the caliper down into position, then install the lower

    caliper bolt and tighten it.

    11. Depress the brake pedal several times to make sure

the brakes work, reinstall the wheel, tighten the lug nuts then road-test.

Turn the lug nuts 1 full turn while wheel on ground, jack the car up and take out all lug nuts.

2 The wheel is out of the way, you should be able to see the brake caliper. Undo the bottom nuts, and entire caliper can be slide up and pads will fall out.

3 Before installing new brake pads, the old brake piston must be pushed back. I use 7%26quot; C clamp.

4 Put the new pads in, place and tighten the caliper bolds %26amp; mount the wheel, and tighten the lug nuts.

pretty easy, but takes practice. I can usually do 30 minutes per wheel.

In step 3, some mechanics don't like to press all that brake fluid in reverse direction (they believe that it can harm ABS controller or brake master cylinder) so they might open up the caliper bleed valve and let the fluid come out instead of pushing it all the way up to the master cylinder. You would need to be careful not to introduce air in the system or you would need to bleed the system. How to change front brake pads in Honda Accord 2005?Here are general photos of front disc pad replacement steps:

I just need to know how to push back the caliper. I know not spelled right sorry. Please just step by step help would be great90 lexus ls 400 how to change front brake pads? You can usually do this by taking the lid off of the reservoir and then putting a C clamp across one of the old pads and back of the caliper. (while the pad is in place)

Crank down on the C clamp slowly (so that no fluid shoots out of the reservoir) until there is enough space to fit the new pads and have them fit over the rotor.

This method doesn't open the system, so air can't get in.

(No need to bleed the system afterwards)

:)90 lexus ls 400 how to change front brake pads?Always open the bleeder, then compress with a clamp or large pliers. After installing your brakes, take the top off the master cylinder, fill it up, and crack the bleeders one at a time for a few seconds to let it gravity bleed. If you dont open the bleeders to compress the caliper, you take a chance of forcing old/dirty brake fluid back into the master cylinder possibly damaging it internally.90 lexus ls 400 how to change front brake pads?Open the bleeder valve and push the pistons back. But you should remove the calipers, blow the pistons out with low (20psi) air pressure, clean out the calipers and carefully put them back together. Again you will need low air pressure. If you have never done this try and find a friend or someone that has to help you. Any dirt or crud in the calipers can cause the brakes to lock up.

OR both, a 12 pack and $20. PLUS you buy the parts.

This how I do for friends. Front brakes are not too hard if a person have the correct tools.

But, it kinda like a Waiter/Waitress. Sometimes we tip more or less depending on service. I have had Elderly people give me $30 and an apple pie. $20 would have been plenty for myself, but, those apple pies are hard to turn down! ;-)

I figure brakes on average cost about $25 for front. Many shops charge around $80 +/- so that about $55 for labor. This may give you a guide as to what it cost elsewhere and maybe you want to pay more than $20 and less than $55. Also, consider any cleaning supplies he may need. How much should i pay a friend to change/fix my front brakes? If he asked for a 12-pack, but you feel this is not enough, get him a 30-pack instead. Or make it a 12-pack of Guinness. As far as $$$, make sure you cover all his expenses -- reimburse him for parts and stuff.

If he's into anything BUT beer, you could get him some of that too. =)How much should i pay a friend to change/fix my front brakes?Front pads should be in the $20-$25 range and it shouldn't take an hour to change them if he has all the proper tools. Same way to install, stick one end of the pad int the slot, then the other end.

Your car will be similar. And, yes, in general, the calipers have to be removed to replace the brake pads. The caliper cylinders must be pushed back into the calipers to allow space for the extra thickness of new pads.

Does the ABS need to be disconnected? Never changed brakes on a vehicle w/ ABS.How to properly change front brake pads on a 2003 silverdao 1/2 ton 2 wheel drive reg. cab v-6?no u dont have to disconnect the abs just do the pads as u would anyother car .......1. take off tires 2. use a big screw driver or pry bar and colapse the caliper piston by inserting it in the opening on top of the caliper, be careful not to scratch the rotor with the screw driver or pry bar, ans do not open any lines before doing this or at any time during the job 3. take off caliper by loosening the 2 bolts on back of caliper 4. remove caliper from rotor and remove brake pads 5. clean the hardware on the caliper and lube it with either a light coat of grease or non drying silicone 5 if u use non drying silicone then apply it to the new pads( prevents the squeaking noises brakes make 6 u may have to finish colapsing the caliper piston if u do use a screw driver and place it on the edge of the piston and push it in the caliper 7. then place the caliper back on the rotor lining up the holes in back for the retaining bolts on the caliper 8. do other side when one side is done.... dont compress both caliper pistons at the saome time it will overflow the master cylinder ..... good luckHow to properly change front brake pads on a 2003 silverdao 1/2 ton 2 wheel drive reg. cab v-6?Unbolt the caliper and replace the pads. Dont forget to take off the brake master cylinder cap to relieve the pressure when you compress the caliper piston with the screwdriver. How to change front brake calipers on a 1996 buick regal custom?

Do you really mean the calipers or just the pads? This is kinda hard to describe in words. You would do better going to a parts store and looking in the manuals for the pictures of the job. How do you change the front brakes on a 95 oldsmobile aurora?

i could use detail instructions so that i dont have to pay anyone else to do it. thanksHow do you change the front brakes on a 95 oldsmobile aurora? This is a quite a complicated task. I have done this, and I would recomend finding someone you know who could help you out. Also, make sure not to get brake fluid near any water. Lastly BE SURE TO BLOCK YOUR REAR WHEELS, so that your car doesn't roll on top of anything or one.

    1. Determine what parts and tools you'll need. If the front brakes are squealing loudly, you'll need pads only. If the car shakes when braking, you'll need to have the rotors resurfaced (called %26quot;turning%26quot;), or replace them. If the car pulls to one side while braking, but stays straight otherwise, you may need calipers.

    2. Go to the parts store and buy more parts than you think you'll need. You can always return what you don't use, and if you get caught without something while the car is apart, you may not be able to go anywhere to buy anything.

    3. Park the car in a clean, well-lit place. Block the rear wheels with something heavy to prevent the car from rolling while it's jacked up. Apply the emergency brake (emergency brakes only use the rear, not the front). Give the car a good couple of shoves from side to side; if it's going to shift on the jackstands or fall off, better now than when you're partially under it with the wheels off.

    4. Remove the front hubcaps and loosen the lug nuts before jacking the car up. If you skip this step, loosening the lugs may be very annoying, if not impossible. It is also extremely dangerous to loosen lug nuts after a car has been jacked up.

    5. Jack the car up with a floor jack and put it on jackstands. Make sure the jackstands are positioned under a solid part of the car - frame or subframe. Finish removing the wheels. Place the wheels under the car, just to the rear of the jackstands. In case the car slips off the stands, those wheels can prevent you from being caught under a falling car.

    6. Make sure you have all the necessary tools. There are two bolts that hold the caliper to the pad bracket, and two bolts that hold the pad bracket to the steering knuckle. If you don't have the tools to remove these, now is the time to put the wheels back on and go to the hardware store. [You may need both SAE and Metric sizes of wrenches and sockets, as well as bleeder screw wrenches. Also, you may need a set of hex key wrenches or a hex bit socket set.]

    7. Remove the caliper from the pad bracket. The pads may come out with the caliper, or stay in the bracket, depending on the car. Place the caliper on top of the steering knuckle, or hang it with a piece of clothes hanger wire or any other place where it won't be hanging from the brake hose.

    8. Remove the pads and inspect them for wear. You may need to employ the large flat screwdriver to get the pads out. If either is down to the metal backing, you'll need to cut or replace the rotors. This is also a good time to compare the wear pattern of the left side brakes to the right side. If there is a vast difference, you'll need to replace the calipers.

    9. Apply antisqueal paste to the backing of the new brake pads, but do not install them yet.

    10. Inspect the brake rotors. If there are any grooves, or excessive glazing, remove them for resurfacing (called %26quot;turning%26quot;) or replacement. Inspect the brake hoses. If they are leaking by the fittings or damaged, they'll need replacing - but that is outside the scope of this article. If you are only installing brake pads, skip to step 20.

    11. Remove brake rotors. Unbolt the pad bracket from the steering knuckle. The bolts that hold this on tend to get frozen, so you may need to employ a hammer, breaker bar, Liquid Wrench or a torch to loosen them.

    12. On most cars, the rotor is separate from the hub. Simply slide the rotor off of the studs. You may need to remove a set screw and/or use a rubber mallet to loosen the rotor. You may need an impact driver to remove a set screw. If the brake rotor and hub are one piece, remove the cotter pin and castle nut from the axle to allow removal.

    13. To get the rotors resurfaced (%26quot;turned%26quot;), take them to a machine shop/auto parts store that turns rotors. Some auto parts stores have brake lathes or a machine shop. Call before starting your job to verify hours; most machine shops are only open until noon on Saturday and are closed on Sunday. Rotor/hub assemblies can be resurfaced (%26quot;turned%26quot;), but I would recommend just replacing them. Even though the replacement parts are expensive, you're replacing the hub and its bearings instead of putting the old hub and bearings back on the car. However, not all new rotor/hub assemblies include the bearings [although they usually install new races, so you can just %26quot;drop in%26quot; the new grease-packed bearings]. You may have to install them yourself, as well as pack them with grease. So a set of bearings may be a necessary purchase as well. [When applicable, this is also a good time to repack your front wheel bearings. Refer to your service manual or lubrication guide for this procedure. You'll need some new cotter pins and wheel bearing grease for this, as well as a pair of needle-nose pliers.]

    14. Install the new or resurfaced (%26quot;turned%26quot;) rotors the same way they came off. New rotors have a layer of oil on them to prevent rust while they're on the shelf. Clean this off with carb cleaner; it works better than brake cleaner in this case. Reattach the pad bracket. If you are not replacing calipers, skip to step 20.

    15. Replacing calipers. Make sure the brake fluid reservoir is securely closed. Remove the bolt holding the brake hose to the caliper. This is a special hollow bolt that allows fluid to flow through it; don't lose it.

    16. Drain the fluid from the caliper into a safe container for proper disposal.

    17. The new caliper will come with two brass washers, rubber grommets for the slide pins, pad retaining clips (if applicable), possibly new slide pins, and maybe that hollow bolt mentioned above. Make sure that the calipers are installed with the bleeder fittings/screws in the upper or top position. If you accidentally switch the left and right calipers and install them on the wrong side (easier to do than you think!), the bleeder fittings will be in a lower position, which will result in trapped air inside the caliper fluid chamber, which will make bleeding the brakes impossible to do. Remember, bleeder screws UP!

    18. If you need to reuse the old slide pins, clean them with a wire wheel or brush.

    19. Reattach the brake hose by putting a new brass or copper washer on each side of the hose fitting, and the hollow bolt through. Reuse of the old washers, or failure to put the new ones in the right place will cause the brakes to leak. Tighten the bolt firmly.

    20. If you haven't done so yet, clean the caliper slide pins, and any place where the pads slide against the caliper or pad bracket with a wire brush. Apply brake lubricant to all of those locations.

    21. Compress the caliper piston, if necessary. Take one of the old brake pads and place it in the caliper against the piston. Using the large C-clamp (usually an 8%26quot; to 10%26quot; size {inner measurement} will do), slowly and evenly compress the piston back into the caliper. An even easier way to compress this piston is use a special (but inexpensive and readily available) Lisle Corp Brake Pad Spreader tool (Lisle part #24400 $7.95) made specifically for this--it beats hauling a heavy 10%26quot; iron C-clamp around--plus it's much faster to use! Some brake fluid may come out of the reservoir at this point; watch out for drips if you're on the driver's side. Be careful, brake fluid will remove the paint from your vehicle!

    22. Put the new pads in the caliper or bracket. You may need to employ the large flat screwdriver again, but this time be more careful so you don't destroy any of the pad clips.

    23. Place the caliper back into the pad bracket, and bolt it in. If you have not replaced the calipers, skip to step 27.

    24. Bleed the brakes. You'll need two people for this, and do one side at a time. Put the wheels back on the car to hold the rotor on straight, but do not let the car down from the jackstands yet.

    25. Remove the rubber cover from the bleeder screw, and unscrew it about 1/4 turn, or just enough to loosen it. Attach an appropriate size clear or rubber hose to the bleeder screw with the other end immersed in brake fluid in a jar or can. This helps to avoid sucking air back into the bleeder screw.

    26. Have your assistant slowly depress the brake pedal until it's at the floor. While the pedal is at the floor, close the bleeder screw. Have your assistant slowly lift the pedal. When the brake pedal is all the way up, open the bleeder screw. Repeat this process until you see brake fluid (without bubbles) coming out of the bleeder. Some brakes are gravity-bleed, and only require you to open the bleeder screw until you see the fluid, without working the brake pedal, but this procedure works in all cases. Make sure the brake fluid reservoir does not run empty, else you'll be introducing air into the brake system again and will have to bleed it all out.

    27. Put the wheels back on. Tighten the lug nuts in an opposing fashion so the wheel goes on straight. Example: If you have five lugs, tighten them in a star pattern.

    28. Check the brake fluid level and fill as necessary.

    29. Sit in the driver's seat and push slowly on the brake pedal a few times. The first time, the pedal may go down a ways, but the pedal should be high and firm after two or three times. This seats the pads against the rotors.

    30. Check for leaks at the brake hoses if you've replaced the calipers.

    31. Lower the car and perform a %26quot;mini%26quot; test drive, with wheel blocks situated a little behind and in front of the vehicles front and rear tires to allow some movement to test the brakes. Otherwise you may find out the hard way that your brakes aren't working. During an actual test drive, make sure the car doesn't pull, that there are no funny clunking noises, and that the brakes are working correctly.

    32. Retorque the lug nuts and put the hubcaps on.

    33. Throw the old parts away, put your tools away and clean up. You're all done. Use a mechanics' hand cleaner, because brake dust contains asbestos, and brakes get really dirtyHow do you change the front brakes on a 95 oldsmobile aurora?Get a chiltons. it details every part of your vehicle and go to an auto shop that will give you the parts AND the information on how to do it.How do you change the front brakes on a 95 oldsmobile aurora?after you remove the wheel, you will see that the calipers are secured with 2 or 3 large allen screws. after you remove those, the caliper should slip off the rotor pretty easily. you will then have to compress the piston on the caliper(you will probably need a large c-clamp for that). install the new brake shoes just like the old ones were, slide the calipers back over the rotor, and put everything back together. be sure to inspect the rotors while you have it apart and if they are gouged too badly, go have them turned(the parts store can usually do this for a fee). How do you change the front brakes on a 95 oldsmobile aurora?its yours and the driver in the car you kill when u crash because u tried to save money!!!!! if u need to ask this question, u have a responsibility to the rest of us on this planet to not do your own brakes. pay up and be safe.

How to loosen carrier bolts when changing front brakes?

The carrier bolts feel rusted onto the hub assembly. I've torqued on them quite hard and they do not budge. It's difficult since they're on the inner-side of the hub but I feel that if I torque any harder that the head of the bolt will break off.

How should I loosen it? I've tried hammering on them and spraying WD40 on them...How to loosen carrier bolts when changing front brakes?try applying some anti-seize lube on them, and then waiting a few hours. then torque awayHow to loosen carrier bolts when changing front brakes?WD 40 is not a lubricant, it's an de-greaser. Try penetrating lube. Spray this on and let is sit, spray some more, and let it sit. Then try to remove them. DO NOT use a torch, this can possibly ruin the piston seals. I've broken a few retaining bolts. There's different ways to take out the bolt that is still in. You can try to drill a hole and take an extractor to remove the bolt if you break the head.

Try this after letting the penetrating lube set. Take the tool you are using to remove the bolts, hit is with a steel hammer while trying to turn the bolt loose, sometimes the impact will loosen the bolt. If you get the bolts out and the heads are questionable, replace them, but make sure to take some anti-seize and put it on the threads of the bolts before you put them back in.

Last resort, is take a torch to them, but you will need to be careful. You will not want to hit the brake line, and you may destroy the piston seal. If this is your last option, you will need to buy loaded calipers. These will come with new brake pads. Install them, and you will need to have another person to help bleed the brake system. The whole brake system. Start from the farthest point, and work your way to the driver wheel. Make sure you buy extra brake fluid, and keep filling between opening each bleeder screw. When you see the air from the bleeder screw that is mounted on the caliper stop flowing air, and just fluid you can close the bleeder screw and start at the next bleeder screw.

    Good Luck!

How and what do i need to replace my front brakes?

short on cash and gonna jump in the water, so to speak. and going to change front brakes on my buick lesabre 1993 and was wondering if i need any special tools to change front brakes. oh. and was hoping for a general explanation on how to do it.and if nobody can help, oh well im just gonna put em on the same way i took off the old ones!! thanks for your time and wish me luck!!How and what do i need to replace my front brakes? This link has instructions and pictures.

http://www.2carpros.com/how_to/how_to_reHow and what do i need to replace my front brakes?A warning: brakes are safety-critical components and doing the work yourself alone for the first time is definitely a bad idea.Get someone with some specific hands-on experience to assist/guide you; next time you can do it alone.

Check a how-to video for your car if available or, alternatively, for a similar one. You shouldn't need special tools, just standard ones (pliers, a set of ring or open or socket wrenches, a C-clamp to press in the pistons) plus a set of new, preferably original brake pads, which is what you want to replace. Check also the rotors - if worn, thin or with deep grooves, replace them too (in pairs!).

Although bleeding is not required, I would suggest a thorough bleeding to renew most of the fluid - the pedal would be higher and firmer than before. How and what do i need to replace my front brakes? You will need 3/8%26quot; allen key, either socket or wrench to remove caliper bolts (2 of them per side). Remove caliper from rotor by prying off with pry bar or large screw driver , remove pads, push in caliper piston with a large c clamp or large channel lock pliers. If you are changing rotors they will either pull right off or you might have to hammer off if rusted on. Lubricate caliper bolts with synthetic brake grease so that the slide freely in and out of caliper bolt bore. Install pads then bolt caliper back on. Do one side at a time so you can look at a complete side if you get stuck. When finished and tires are on Do Not Move Vehicle until you press brake pedal a few times to push piston out to contact pad with rotor (hard pedal). How and what do i need to replace my front brakes?NO. you dont mess with brakes if you dont know what youre doing. this is a vital system of your car, and if something is done incorrectly, not only can you damage your car, but you can hurt yourself and others because of your faulty work. i highly recommend buying a chiltons or haynes repair manual from kragen or autozone and reading up on how to change your brake pads. also if your looking for this to be cheap, you might aswell look up on craigslist for a mechanic that can take it on as a side job, or just take it to a shop. if you dont have any of the tools or a discount on the parts, your gonna end up paying close to what youd be charged by a mechanic anyways. id say without looking at your car, id charge you about 60 to 80 bucks depending on whether u wanted the rotors replaced or resurfaced. also thats not even mentioning if you mess something up while doing this work.

your car isnt the newest either, and sometimes things can get picky and difficult on a car that old.

My pedal feels squishy and when I start my car it can almost reach the floor before I give it a few pumps then it's fine again. Should I bleed the lines? I bought this run around car and it needs new front brakes. Is it possible to change the front brakes myself? Or is it too hard? If it is possible how do I find out how to do it?

Thanks in advance for any answers:)Is it hard to change the front brakes on a 90 Honda civic? You could change your front brakes in about 30 minutes, it is a very simple procedure, and you can purchase a Haynes, or Chilton's repair manual for your particular car for about 20 bucks, my only advice is to buy the high grade brake pads, don't buy bargain brake pads or you'll find that they begin to fade very quickly on long downhill grades, if you don't know what fade means, it means when you push on the brake pedal and the pads get hot their stopping ability fades until they don't work at all, just buy quality pads and a repair manual and you'll do just fine.Hope this helps.

    How To

    Change Your Brake Pads

Nothing is more important than your car%26#039;s ability to stop itself.

Even race car drivers will tell you that a car%26#039;s braking capacity takes precedence over its acceleration. Putting a car through a wall is not nearly as much fun as touching the brakes slightly, banking into a turn, and scooting out the other side. Nor as safe.

But braking systems often fail us -- usually from our own neglect. Even Formula One cars won%26#039;t stop as effectively with worn brake pads. It%26#039;s the equipment, folks, not the driver.

In the case of braking, it%26#039;s essential that we maintain optimum friction pad depth to insure maximum performance of the braking system. In layman%26#039;s terms: change your brake pads!

In previous articles at Edmunds.com we%26#039;ve discussed the ins and outs of braking systems. The link below provides an excellent primer on the differences between drum and disc brakes. You might want to read it before going any further.

    Brakes: Drum vs. Disc

Okay, here%26#039;s the deal. We%26#039;re not going to go into some long, drawn-out discussion about the advantages and disadvantages of various braking systems, drag coefficients, friction rates, kinetic versus thermal energy, etc., etc. What we%26#039;re going to do here is roll up our sleeves and do a brake reline. Leave that other stuff to the armchair mechanics, the sideline slackers.

As always with our How To columns, we suggest that you own a basic tool kit and have the time to commit to the task. This will take a few hours. In exchange, we hope to teach you a little something about braking systems and what makes them tick.

As we said at the outset, nothing is more important than your car%26#039;s ability to stop itself. Learning about the braking system -- how it works, ways to maintain it, when to fix it, what to look for while you%26#039;re in there -- will not only make you a smarter driver, but a safer one too.

    *

Since we have a limited amount of space here, we%26#039;re going to focus exclusively on changing the front brake pads. Ninety percent of the brake pad changes you make during the life of your vehicle will be to the front pads.

You can check for brake pad wear by viewing the pads from outside the front tire. On most cars, you can look through the openings on the outside of the wheel/rim assembly to see the pads. (Of the six cars we looked at for this story, all but one had the pads clearly visible. On rare occasions, you may have to remove the wheel to see the pads.) The outside pad should be staring you in the face. Look at it from above. The pad will be pressed against the shiny metal rotor. See it?

Now, there are two way to determine whether the pads need replacing.

First, visually. If the pad depth is less than 录 inch, plan on replacing it soon. If it%26#039;s less than 1/8 inch, you%26#039;re getting close to damaging the rotor, so do it ASAP. This varies slightly from car to car, but is a good general guideline.

Second, by ear. They build these little noisemaking shims into the brake assembly to tell you when the pads need changing. Are you hearing a screeching sound when you apply the brakes, like a mouse trying to escape? You%26#039;re overdue for a reline. (If the sound is more a scrape-y metal rasp, you%26#039;ve already damaged your rotors and need to fix the brakes immediately.)

Okay, you%26#039;ve determined that the front pads are due for replacement. Remember the rule here: better too soon than too late, which can result not only in more expensive repairs, but unsafe driving conditions as well. So let%26#039;s go...

STEP ONE: Comfort first. Park the car in a cool, shady spot.

STEP TWO: Now safety. Block the rear wheels so the car won%26#039;t roll once you jack it up. Put the car in park and set the parking brake firmly.

STEP THREE: Lay out your tools. Grab a tire iron and go to the front wheels. The tire iron is that long metal rod with a socket on the end of it that usually comes with the vehicle. You can also buy a really cool one (called a spinner) that looks like a metal cross -- in fact, it is a metal cross -- with different-sized sockets on each end.

What we want to do here, before jacking the car up off the ground, is loosen the lug nuts on the wheels just enough to break them free. So go do that. Work them off just enough until they loosen their resistance and become easy to turn with the tire iron. Now slip the jack under the car.

There are several places to safely jack up the car. If you have a floorjack, you can roll it all the way under to the center of the engine and jack it up using the K-member that holds the engine. Be careful not to use the oil pan, as you might damage it. If you have a smaller, single floor jack, you%26#039;ll have to do one side at a time. Look for flat spots on the frame, immediately to the rear of the front wheels, or on the end of each axle.

CAUTION: Always use jack stands. Never attempt to work on an elevated vehicle held in place only by a hydraulic jack.

Okay, raise the front axle off the ground. Put your jack stands under each end of the axle, and lower the car onto the stands. A jack stand (see illustration) is a metal tripod with variable height adjustments. You should own two.

STEP FOUR: Remove the lug nuts and the wheel (the tire will be attached). Best to work on one wheel at a time, leaving the other side intact as a point of reference. As a safety precaution, roll the wheel/tire assembly under the front-center of the car, between the jack stands, and plop it down beneath the engine%26#039;s K-member. In the event of a faulty jack stand, this will break the vehicle%26#039;s fall and could possibly save your life.

STEP FIVE: Okay, take a breather. Now let%26#039;s look at what we have before us.

A disc brake assembly is composed of the following elements: a caliper, two brake pads, a rotor, and some bolts and clips to hold it alltogether. It%26#039;s a very simple design. Here%26#039;s how it works.

The caliper comes in two flavors -- floating or fixed. Each works on a similar principle. The caliper%26#039;s job is to squeeze the brake pads toward a centrally located metal plate -- the rotor -- producing friction, which in turn slows the car. Think of a hand slowly clamping down on a spinning record (or a CD, for you youngin%26#039;s who%26#039;ve never heard the term %26quot;record%26quot; before).

The brake pads hover on either side of the metal plate. They attach to the inside of the caliper, depending on your car%26#039;s design, with clips or bolts. They are composed of heat-resistant material that rubs against the rotor. When the brakes are applied, the pads move toward one another, gripping the rotor between them and slowing the wheels.

The rotor is that shiny metal disc staring you in the face right now. You can almost see your reflection, right? Get your eyes level with it. If you can%26#039;t see your face, or at least its general outline, it may mean that the disc needs servicing or replacement. Below, we%26#039;ll show you how to check this disc for scoring or marring, and what to do about that.

STEP SIX: Back to work. Remove the bolts holding the caliper in place. Gently slide it out and away from the rotor. Inspect the inside of the caliper. See the pads? They will be held in place by a bolt or a series of clips, sometimes both. Remove the bolts or clips holding the pads in place (remember, you left the other side intact to use as a reference) and work them free. Examine the pads. Is there any %26quot;meat%26quot; left on them, or are they worn down to the screws? If they%26#039;re completely worn, you should%26#039;ve been hearing a metallic scrape for a while every time you applied the brakes.

Lay the pads aside and inspect the rotor. Can you see yourself in it? If the pads were worn into the metal, your rotor will be scored; you%26#039;ll have trouble seeing yourself. Run your fingernails along the surface of the rotor -- careful, though; if it%26#039;s been less than 20 minutes since you last drove the vehicle, they might still be hot -- first the side facing you, then the side facing away. Is it scored? Deeply? This next point is very important. If the rotor has any grooves at all in it, remove it at once. Now you have a decision to make.

If you have a scored rotor, you must decide whether to have it %26quot;turned%26quot; or to replace it. If you%26#039;re short on money, take it to a local mechanic and ask him to %26quot;turn%26quot; it for you. What they do is put it on a special metal-cutting lathe and shave off several thousandths of an inch of metal until the disc is shiny again. Remember, though, one of the real advantages of disc brakes over drum is their heat-handling capability. By removing metal, you reduce the system%26#039;s thermal transfer capacity. We recommend turning the discs only when you are short on bucks. The better way is to take the disc to the auto parts store, match it up with a replacement, and buy a new one. Last time we did this, it only cost us twenty bucks for a new rotor, a cheap investment in safety. You have to go there anyway to buy the new brake pads, as well as a few other things, so why not make it one trip. In fact, here%26#039;s your shopping list:

new rotor, or rotors, if needed

new brake pads (bring the old ones, to match them)

brake pad grease (comes in little packets; they%26#039;re cheap, so buy two)

STEP SEVEN: Go home and have a lemonade.

STEP EIGHT: Before you go any further, you must move the piston back to its %26quot;full open%26quot; position. The piston? you ask. Ah, we didn%26#039;t tell you about that one, did we? Remember the hand-and-record analogy. As the fingers push down (equivalent to the brake pads wearing) the distance between the brake pads shortens. Now that we have brand new pads, we must return the system -- the hand -- to its original %26quot;open%26quot; position, to accommodate the new pads. There are several ways to do this.

First, find the piston. It is located along the back (closest to the engine) portion of the caliper. It%26#039;s usually about three to four inches across, and resembles a small metal promontory with a flat top. See it? Depending on its condition and age, there are several things you can do to move it back (toward the center of the car). If it%26#039;s new, try pushing it in with the heel of your hand. Doesn%26#039;t work? Okay, then try a channel lock or a vise grip. Still won%26#039;t budge? Then here%26#039;s a suggestion. A neighbor of ours turned us on to this once, and it works great. Get a large C-clamp, place a thin piece of wood or cardboard over the face of the piston to protect the surface from marring, and work it back that way. As you turn the handle on the clamp, it will increase pressure on the piston, until it becomes flush with the surrounding metal. Then loosen and remove the C-clamp.

STEP NINE:Install the new rotor, if necessary. Remove the old brake pads from the caliper (usually held in place by several clips), but, before putting on the new ones, you must do something. Remember the little packets of grease you bought? These are used to lubricate the brake pads. Careful now -- not on the front of the pad, which comes in contact with the rotor, but on the back. The pads attach to the caliper via a plate-and-clip arrangement. The lubricant goes between the plate and the back of the brake pad. Got it?

Don%26#039;t overlook this. If you don%26#039;t do it, you%26#039;ll get a horrible screeching sound every time you apply the brakes, like a dinosaur in heat (and you know how horny those velociraptors used to get). After you apply the grease, attach the pad to the plate and slide the whole thing into place.

STEP TEN:. Basically, at this point, just reassemble the system in reverse order of the way you took it apart. Now do the other side. Take the car for a test spin. Sometimes, with new brakes, you can get some weird scraping and scratching sounds; these will usually go away in a few days. Clean up, and you%26#039;re done.

Don%26#039;t underestimate the importance of a brake reline. As we said at the outset, absolutely nothing is more important than your car%26#039;s ability to stop itself. Knowing more about your car%26#039;s braking system -- getting in there and actually seeing what%26#039;s going on -- empowers and informs you in a way that going to the corner mechanic doesn%26#039;t.How do I change front brake pads on a 03%26#039; 4Runner?it%26#039;s a four wheel drive then you%26#039;ll need to use a Allen wrench or metric wrench to get the discs off if it %26#039;s a stander ed you%26#039;ll need big screw driver needle nose pliers and a reg.pair of pliers. How do I change front brake pads on a 03%26#039; 4Runner?unds methodundshttp://www.chiltonsonline.com/

You are a complete novice, it sounds like, and need pictures and diagrams to assist you. It is not a difficult job but does require a little knowledge to get it right.

Never, repeat, never go to a dealer except for warranty work. Watch your step even then, they will sell you unnecessary work.

As for abs, carefully take off wheel and you should be able to see the abs pick and sensor. Just don%26#039;t damage it.

If you get a Chiltons repair manual it should tell you all about it.

Don%26#039;t buy an Edmunds manual, they are terrible.

How do you change front brake pads on a 1997 Buick LaSabre?

My brother-in-law is convinced he needs an allen wrench to change the front brake pads on his car. The allen wrench is supposedly needed to remove a bracket that is holding the calipers in place. He thinks the calepers need to be removed to change brake pads. I've never experienced this, but i guess it could be true. How do you change front brake pads on a 1997 Buick LaSabre? Most all General Motors cars, you would need to remove the calipers to change the pads. On many Japanese and European cars you don't have to. Most older GM calipers were held on by a pair of bolts with an %26quot;Allen%26quot; head, but most later models you will need a %26quot;Torx%26quot; bit.

The caliper bracket on these cars is an integral part of the steering knuckle, which cannot be removed, and removing the caliper will allow removal of the rotor. On some other cars the caliper bracket is removable, and would have to be removed to remove the rotor.

Some calipers are mounted using standard bolts while some use clips, and others use allen screws. How do you change front brake pads on a 1997 Buick LaSabre?ez remove wheels their is just to bolts u need a spacial key it looks like a star and your doneHow do you change front brake pads on a 1997 Buick LaSabre?yes he will need an allen wrench to take two bolts out of the caliper that mounts the caliper to the spindle. the bolts are facing toward the car with the bolt heads facing the car. it is like this with almost every car that has disk brakes that i know of.How do you change front brake pads on a 1997 Buick LaSabre?you do need to remove the calipers to change pads. you will need a brake caliper socket to use with a ratchet. the tool is used to remove the caliper bolts. you can't change pads without removing the bolts and the caliper. if the bolts have a male head you can use a normal socket to remove them but if it is female you will need to use that caliper socket. you could use an allen wrench but you need to create a tremendous amount of force to remove it and an allen wrench would be difficult. you need to compress the piston on the caliper once you have it off so installing the new pads will be easier. remember to support the caliper once it is off so that it doesn't hang by the brake hose. you can use a small bunge cord and attach it to the spring or somewhere out of the way. also remember to grease the caliper bolts before reinstalling them. How do you change front brake pads on a 1997 Buick LaSabre?yes you must remove the calipers. Get the special allen socket at a parts store. If you dont know how to do it have a friend help you.
