2000 Ford Explorer xls?

Hello

My truck just started making a grinding noise while braking. I would like to know how to change the front brakes and what parts are needed to complete the job including tools. I would also like to know about how long all this will take because if its too long I will probably take it to the repair shop.Diagrams would be helpfull as well.

Thanks for all your answers!2000 Ford Explorer xls?You need to unbolt the caliper, machine the rotors if they are within specs, and lubricate the hardware and caliper slides. That question is like asking: I have a friend that needs a heart transplant, I dont want to pay because the doctor is a rip off, so i want to do it myself and save money, but can you tell me what is needed and what i need to do to make it succeed.2000 Ford Explorer xls?Bring it to a cheap independent mechanic. Replacing the brake pads without having the rotors turned is useless you will just wear out a set of pads.

Google a diagram if you want to do it yourself, but a brake job isn't really something to try for the first time.

That's a life and death mistake you can make.

Brake pads are cheap, turning rotors are cheap. Your looking at less than a $100 job!2000 Ford Explorer xls?If you are at a point that it is 'grinding', then you have let it go way too far.

Changing the pads relatively easy, but I am willing to bet that the rotors will need to be resurfaced at best, or replaced if it has been grinding long.

Remove the calipers, pull the rotors, take them to a machine shop, they will measure them to see if they can be resurfaced and remain within specs, replace the pads and you are on your way.

Better yet, take it to a mechanic that you trust, and let him do it, I am betting that he will do it faster, and without any mistakes...:)
